Ho’s project aims to better understand how individual and contextual factors interact to chart the course of ethnic and racial identity (ERI) development of African American students attending predominantly white institutions (PWI).

Her study will move beyond conceptualizations by allowing participants to identify their preferred identity labels and describe what it means for them to labeled as such. Through her research, Ho also hopes to gain insight into the dynamic interactions between identity labels, identity meanings, and contexts.

This investigation will build on Ho’s master’s thesis, which is a qualitative project exploring ERI development of African American and Hispanic American college students attending a PWI. The funding from APAGS will allow her to reach a larger sample of African American students, in order to facilitate a mixed-methods design with qualitative and quantitative analyses.
